Gemotions

The library card felt slippery in Emily’s sweaty hand. Her gaze darted from person to person, convinced everyone was staring at her. She avoided eye contact and felt as if she was surrounded by invisible critics.

She tried to focus on the text, but the words swam on the page. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a tightness that made it hard to breathe. The accusations, still fresh in her mind, had stolen her ability to reason.

She closed the book, suddenly overwhelmed. She needed to get away, to escape the crushing weight of the situation. Her legs felt weak. She stood, trembling, and began to hurry towards the exit.
