The email sat in my inbox, unread. My fingers hovered over the mouse, the cursor a mocking taunt. They'd promised to let us know by noon. It was now quarter past. I kept refreshing the page, as if the server was just malfunctioning.

Across the city, I knew, Emily was probably in the same position, hunched over her laptop, waiting. The thought made my skin crawl. We’d bonded over our shared love of this particular company, over shared dreams of innovation. Now, it was us against the world.

I finally clicked. The subject line: "Update Regarding Your Application." My breath caught. The screen blurred.
