The ballroom seemed to spin. David gripped the edge of the bar, knuckles white. The clinking of glasses and the chatter of the crowd sounded distant, muffled. He hadn't slept properly in days, and now, the wedding reception felt like a bizarre, surreal dream.

He’d rehearsed a dozen different scenarios in his head, each one resulting in a variety of awkward or painful outcomes. He’d told himself he was over her, that he was fine, but the tightening in his chest suggested otherwise. He was acutely aware of every single movement he made.

He saw her across the room, laughing at something a friend had said. Time seemed to slow. He felt a wave of cold wash over him, leaving him shaky and off balance.
