The string quartet's melodic strains grated against Maya's ears. She felt a profound sense of unease, a jittery energy that made it impossible to relax. She pretended to be deeply engrossed in her conversation with a distant relative, but her attention was elsewhere.

She had spent the preceding weeks convincing herself that seeing him wouldn't be a problem. That she was over it. That it was all in the past. Her current state proved otherwise. She kept reaching for her wine glass, finding the need for a constant replenishment.
