The flickering neon sign of the bar across the street seemed to mock Amelia. Her palms were slick against the worn leather of her purse. Liam, always so put-together, so assured, had told her he was a corporate lawyer. Now, standing here, watching him sling beers behind the counter of a dive bar, her stomach churned. He’d told her he was at a conference. The image of the fancy hotel, the expensive suit, the air of self-importance… all of it felt like a cruel joke now. She took a shaky breath and started across the street.
