The room seemed to shrink. Beads of perspiration dotted David’s forehead as he listened to the details. He clutched the rim of his coffee mug so hard his knuckles turned white. He’d always admired Emily’s glamorous lifestyle. The exotic vacations, the designer clothes… all made possible, she’d claimed, by her high-powered position in the fashion industry. Now, here was their mutual friend, Mark, casually mentioning Emily's actual job – a cashier at a local grocery store. David wanted to argue, to deny it, but his voice caught in his throat.
