The dial tone echoed in Amelia's ears after she'd hung up the phone. She replayed the conversation in her mind, or rather, the last five minutes of it, the only portion she'd heard. Her pulse hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the kitchen. She picked at a loose thread on the tablecloth, her fingers finding no purchase, just the persistent sensation of needing to *do* something.
