Maya ran a hand through her hair, the strands catching on her lip gloss. The attic air was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things. She tugged open a cardboard box labeled "Maya's School Days," and her pulse quickened. Inside, neatly stacked, were folders. Years of them. The sheer volume of paper felt oppressive, like a physical weight pressing down on her chest.

Each folder held a neatly handwritten name, a date, and a meticulously crafted label. She flipped through a history report on the Roman Empire, her fingers trembling slightly. The familiar handwriting, her mother's precise, looping script, stared back at her. Her breath hitched.

A wave of heat washed over her face. She closed the folder abruptly and leaned against the dusty wall. She really wasn't in the mood.
