He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a simple notification, but it contained a secret message of dread. He felt his pulse quicken, his breath become shallow. He clicked on the attachments, each one a fresh assault on his sanity.

He felt the walls closing in. He got up from his chair and wandered aimlessly around his apartment, unable to focus on anything. His thoughts were fragmented, jumping from one terrifying scenario to another. He felt a need to break something.

He ran his hands through his hair, tugging at the strands. He opened a window and leaned out, seeking the fresh air. The city lights twinkled in the distance, but they offered no comfort. He slammed the window shut, a frustrated sound in the quiet space.
