The email arrived late on Friday afternoon. "Congratulations, you are now part of the Development team." Alex had barely slept since. Now, standing outside the door, he felt like he was walking into a firing squad. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to smooth it down. It didn’t work.

He remembered the job interview, the bright lights, the fast-talking interviewers. The pressure to come across as confident had been overwhelming. Now, he felt as if his stomach had turned inside out. He pushed the door open, the sound echoing in his ears.

He scanned the room. Everywhere he looked, people were chatting, laughing, gesturing animatedly. He felt like he was invisible. He quickly retreated to his new desk and slumped in his chair, feeling small and insignificant.
