She’d spent weeks agonizing over the guest list, meticulously crafting the perfect email, checking and rechecking every RSVP. Now, the carefully constructed facade of composure she'd built crumbled. A single phone call, a hushed voice, and it was all gone. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to let them fall. Her fingers drummed a rapid tattoo against the kitchen counter, a staccato beat mirroring her racing pulse.

The house, once filled with the promise of laughter and celebration, now felt cavernous and empty. She ran her fingers through her hair, tangling the strands. The carefully chosen decorations, the vibrant balloons, the streamers – all felt mocking. She wished she could just sit and do nothing. But the need to do something, anything, propelled her into action. She had to take the decorations down.
