He stared at the calendar, the red circle marking the date now mocking him. The elaborate plans, the meticulous preparations, now felt absurd. A knot of unease tightened in his stomach. He’d spent so long working towards this, imagining the faces, the laughter. Now? Nothing. He felt the need to fidget.

He walked over to the window and stared out at the street. People walked by, oblivious to the turmoil inside him. He picked up his phone, then put it down again. He couldn't face calling anyone. The silence in his apartment was deafening, amplified by the sudden emptiness that had settled over him. He felt so exposed.
