He had been counting down the hours, picturing the faces, imagining the toasts. Now, he stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. The party, meticulously planned, painstakingly prepared for, was cancelled. He felt a sudden, sharp sting behind his eyes. He blinked rapidly, fighting the urge to cry.

He walked to the window, the image of the party, now a phantom of the past, dancing in his head. His hands fidgeted, picking at the loose threads of his new jacket. The world outside seemed to spin. He needed to be somewhere safe, somewhere quiet. He sat down and put his head in his hands.
