Sarah twisted the engagement ring on her finger. The gold felt cold against her skin. Liam had been acting… off. Secretive. He’d started disappearing into his home office after dinner, muttering under his breath. The door was always closed. The silence that followed was often broken by the click of a keyboard. Now, as she walked past, she heard him speaking… but not in English.

She leaned closer, pressing her ear to the wood. It was Korean, the language of her ancestors, the language she hadn’t spoken since childhood. Her pulse quickened. Her breath hitched. She pulled back quickly, her hand flying to her mouth.

She went to the kitchen, poured herself a glass of water, and took a long, slow sip. She stared out the window, her gaze unfocused. The water tasted metallic.
