He stared at the sign taped to the window of The Golden Spoon. "Closed for Business." A wave of heat washed over Daniel, leaving him unsteady. He tugged at his collar, but it offered no relief.

The Golden Spoon had been his escape, the place he went after a tough day at work. He’d sit at the counter, the clatter of plates a comforting soundtrack, while he savored the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. It was a ritual, a balm to his frayed nerves.

He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a few stray strands. Where would he go now? The thought brought a tightness to his throat, a sudden need to flee. He turned and walked away, his steps hurried.
