He felt his stomach tighten as he approached the cluttered table. Each object felt like an accusation, a judgment on his life's choices. The sale buzzed with conversation, a cacophony that intensified the pressure building in his head. He usually avoided crowds, preferring the solace of his quiet apartment, but he was here, compelled by an invisible force.

Then, there it was. A battered, familiar shape, tucked beneath a pile of mismatched teacups. It was Rupert, his childhood companion, his silent confidante. His heart thumped erratically. He remembered the feel of Rupert's soft fur, the way he smelled of sunshine and childhood. The man running the sale watched him, a slight smirk playing on his lips.

"Ten bucks," the man said. He struggled to meet the man's eyes, and felt his throat constrict. He handed over the money, his hand trembling slightly. Holding Rupert, he moved away from the table, breathing deeply in an effort to calm the rapid beat of his heart. The day suddenly felt a little less heavy.
