"Are you sure about this, Liam?" Ethan asked, fiddling with the strap of his messenger bag. The question hung in the air, heavy with unspoken concerns. Liam ignored the tremor in his hands. He grabbed his keys and unlocked the old front door.

Inside, the silence was almost deafening. The air was thick, carrying a musty, forgotten smell. Liam moved through the hallway as if navigating a minefield, each step deliberate, each sound amplified.

He found himself constantly checking over his shoulder, as if expecting someone, or something, to be there. He could feel his heart pounding against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the stillness.

"Just… get it over with," he muttered, opening the living room curtains. The sudden influx of light made him squint. He didn't want to fail.
