Sarah paced the length of her living room, her steps a frantic rhythm against the hardwood floor. The test results. The implication. It settled like a cold stone in her stomach. Her adoptive parents, the only parents she’d ever known, were not her genetic relatives.

She picked up a framed photo of them, her heart twisting. Their faces, so familiar, suddenly felt… distant. She clutched the frame tightly, her knuckles turning white. The room seemed to shrink around her, the walls closing in. She dropped the frame and sat on the floor, breathing rapidly, her vision blurring. What had she done?

Her phone buzzed with another notification. She slammed her hand down on it. Maybe if she ignored it, this would all disappear, but it wouldn’t. The realization was as bitter as it was unavoidable.
