The information slammed into her like a tidal wave. Maya stared at the screen, feeling a wave of nausea. She rose from her chair, her legs suddenly weak and unsteady. Her familiar life had become a facade, a cleverly constructed illusion.

She went to the window, seeking a breath of clarity. She stared at the city, but it was just a blur of colors. She turned away from the view, looking back at the email, but she couldn't seem to process the text.

She reached for her coat and walked out the door. She didn't know where she was going, but she had to move, to escape the suffocating weight of this new reality. She was in freefall.
