“I don’t understand,” Maya murmured, her voice barely a whisper. Her grandmother’s silver bracelet, the one she always wore, was going on the market. She ran her fingers across her own wrist, the skin feeling cold and clammy.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her back straight, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She felt a prickling sensation that traveled all the way up her spine. Her breathing became shallow and rapid. She could almost taste the metallic tang of fear.

The thought of someone else owning it, wearing it... it was a physical blow, a pain that radiated through her entire being. She needed to be alone. She needed to escape.
