The slam of the screen door made her jump. It was always the same. Shadow, the golden retriever next door, was again frolicking through her petunias. Her breath hitched, and she gripped the watering can so tightly her knuckles were white. The garden was her sanctuary, meticulously planned and maintained, a refuge from the chaos of everything else. Now, the dog’s muddy paws threatened to ruin it all.

She crept out, whispering a strained “Shoo!” The dog, oblivious, wagged its tail and pranced closer, its big, brown eyes filled with innocent glee. She took a deep, involuntary breath, willing herself to remain calm.

Every muscle in her body was wound tight. The thought of confronting Mr. Henderson, the dog’s owner, again filled her with dread. He always acted so bewildered, so oblivious. She didn't want to make a scene.
