He paced the length of his tiny dorm room, the worn carpet offering little comfort. The news had hit him like a physical blow, leaving him winded. The scholarship, the lifeline, was a mistake. Now, the weight of the upcoming semester pressed down on him with crushing force. He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair, the action a futile attempt to make sense of the situation. His breath came in shallow, rapid pants.

His phone buzzed with a message from his mother. He couldn't bring himself to read it. He knew what she would say, and the thought of her disappointment made his chest tighten.
