The small, cluttered office suddenly seemed to shrink around Olivia. Her daughter, Maya, was posting things online that didn’t make any sense. It was as if she were speaking a different language.

Her hands were shaking. She picked up a pen and fiddled with it, tapping it against the desk. Her breath hitched in her throat with every new post.

The pictures, the comments…they were all foreign, full of inside jokes and coded messages. She felt a sharp sting behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to tears. She didn't know what to do. She felt lost.
