The gallery was packed, a swirl of art enthusiasts and pretentious chatter. Clara scanned the room, her gaze searching. Then she saw Ben. He was talking animatedly to a group of people, gesturing with his hands. She felt a sudden lightness in her head. He looked so comfortable, so at ease. She suddenly felt a sharp, stabbing pain in her stomach.

She hadn’t expected this. She wasn’t ready. She tried to steady herself, taking a deep breath. She approached him, each step felt like he was wading through molasses. "Ben?" she called out, hoping to sound casual.

He turned, and a polite smile appeared on his face. “Hello,” he said, but his eyes were empty of recognition. “Have we met?” The blood drained from her face. She felt herself sway.
