The envelope sat on her kitchen counter, a stark white rectangle that dominated the space. She’d made a pot of tea hours ago, but the cup remained untouched, the liquid cold and stale. Her hands fidgeted, picking at the loose threads on the tablecloth.

She’d practiced her reaction, rehearsed a casual shrug, a sophisticated smile. But now, all her carefully constructed composure crumbled. She felt a knot forming in her stomach, a tight, twisting coil that threatened to unravel completely. She began to chew at the inside of her cheek.

The sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Each floating particle seemed to taunt her, mocking her with its carefree existence. Opening the envelope felt like stepping off a cliff. She felt a burning need to be somewhere else, anywhere else.
