The fluorescent lights of the storage unit hummed, the sound grating on Amelia’s nerves. She clutched the letter, her knuckles white against the yellowed paper. It was a letter to her former boss, written the night before she quit her job, full of pent-up rage she never released.

She felt a tremor in her hands, a physical manifestation of the turmoil churning within her. Her stomach twisted into knots, and a bitter taste filled her mouth. The cramped space of the unit felt like a suffocating cage.

She should have sent it. She should have said what she meant. She crumpled the letter, then quickly smoothed it out, the action both violent and hesitant. Her breath came in short, ragged bursts.
