The notification buzzed, jolting Marcus out of a near sleep. He squinted at the screen. The text he'd just sent, meant to be a private confession of his feelings for his coworker, had gone to the coworker's *husband*.

He bolted upright, his heart hammering against his ribs. His mouth felt dry and chalky. He should have checked the name. He should have double-checked. Now, the damage was done.

He pictured the husband's reaction. The anger. The accusations. He would lose his job. The potential for social embarrassment was too much to even consider.

He felt a deep sense of dread creep into his core. He fumbled for a glass of water, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped the glass.
