The familiar click of the door lock was jarring. Daniel had arrived home. He couldn't shake the news that Professor Lee was leaving. His heart hammered in his chest, a frantic drumbeat against his ribs.

He tossed his keys on the counter with more force than necessary, the metallic clang echoing through the apartment. He went over to the window, and looked outside. The world seemed normal. But inside, everything felt disrupted, off-kilter.

He ran a hand through his hair, pulling at the strands. He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. He wanted the world to stop. He felt a desperate need to control something. He started pacing, back and forth, the worn rug under his feet a constant reminder of the relentless churn within him.
