Gemotions

The email sat unopened in the inbox. Lucy stared at it, the subject line – “Big News!” – a flashing neon sign of impending doom. She knew what it contained. Emily had hinted at it for weeks. Her stomach churned with a strange unease. She wanted to open it, to get it over with, but her fingers hovered over the mouse, frozen.

She got up and walked around her apartment, fiddling with things. She picked up a framed photograph of the two of them, their arms slung around each other, laughing, and put it back down, as if burned. She kept replaying their last conversation in her mind, searching for a sign, a hint of what was to come.

She finally sat back down, and with a shaky breath, clicked on the email.
