The drive home felt interminable. Alex gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were white. He kept replaying the conversation in his head, each word a sharp, cutting edge. He’d barely said anything. He’d just listened, numb, as Sam described her plans to move. He kept his eyes on the road, trying to make the world into a manageable, straight line.

He pulled into the driveway, the gravel crunching beneath the tires. He sat there for a long moment, the engine idling. He felt a profound sense of isolation, as if a large part of himself had been ripped away. His breath hitched in his chest.
