He hadn't slept well since the phone call. His mind kept racing, replaying every detail of the conversation. He woke up early, with a cold sweat clinging to his skin. He couldn't eat. He paced his apartment, restless and agitated. He went to the window, staring out at the empty street.

He felt a deep hollowness, a void that yawned within him. The world felt muted, lacking color. He kept reaching for his phone, then stopping. He knew he had to talk to her, but the thought of it made his heart pound.

He sat on his couch and slowly began to rock.
