He pulled the car over, the engine cutting out abruptly. His chest felt constricted. The house was right there, just across the street. He could see it from here, bathed in the late afternoon sun. He shouldn't have come.

A dry mouth made it difficult for him to swallow. He was suddenly overwhelmed with memories, each one sharper and more vivid than the last. He fiddled with the radio, turning the volume up and down, trying to find something, anything, to distract him.

He was sweating, despite the cool air blowing from the vents. He knew what he had to do. He reached for the door handle.
