The email sat in Eleanor's inbox, bold and unwelcome. "Subject: Regarding Your Father." Her fingers tightened on the mouse. Her breath hitched. She clicked, and a wave of heat flushed her cheeks. The sender was a lawyer, and the brief message stated that her father, deceased these past five years, had fathered another child. A sibling. A complete stranger. She felt a tremor run through her.

She rose and paced her small apartment, back and forth in a measured rhythm. The email’s words echoed in her mind. Another child. Her father. A secret. She stopped, grabbing a water bottle and taking a large gulp, the cold liquid barely cooling her burning throat.

Her mind swirled with questions, but they remained unfocused, chaotic. She imagined the meeting, the inevitable confrontation. How could she possibly navigate this minefield? A knot formed in her stomach, twisting with each imagined scenario. She needed something, anything, to quell the building pressure. She opened her laptop and started a mindless online shopping spree, adding items to her basket that she didn't need and wouldn’t buy.
