The coffee shop buzzed with a low, chaotic energy that intensified the internal clamor in Maya’s head. She’d always prided herself on being first. She'd been certain she’d be the one to unlock this funding. Today's meeting with the board had been the culmination of everything. But she kept replaying the presentation in her mind, over and over, catching flaws.

Then, there was David. The man had just waved at her, beckoning her to his table. She hadn’t expected to see him. David from the rival firm, who was smiling broadly.

"Great work," he began, his voice surprisingly gentle. "I can't believe it. Your prototype! It's… almost identical to ours." He leaned back, his expression expectant.

Maya gripped her iced latte so tightly that her knuckles were white. The world seemed to shrink around her. His words felt like a blow. She could only manage a tight, shallow smile in return.
