He fidgeted with the worn strap of his messenger bag, the leather creaking in protest. The hospital lobby was a symphony of hushed tones and echoing footsteps, each sound a discordant note in his already frayed nerves. His stomach was a knot, and he felt the familiar urge to pace, to flee. The elevator doors opened with a metallic clang, and he flinched.

“Mr. Davies?” a nurse called, her voice bright and cheerful. He barely managed to nod, his throat constricted.

He followed her, his shoes scuffing the polished floor. The hallway seemed to stretch on forever, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. Every step was a battle against the overwhelming need to retreat, to disappear.

Then, at the end of the hall, he saw her. A young woman, slumped in a chair, hugging herself. He recognized the look in her eyes – the same brittle fear he had been battling for years. The shared misery, the silent understanding.
