Gemotions

The doorbell chimed, a sound that made Elara’s breath hitch. She peered through the peephole. A delivery person, holding a bouquet of vibrant lilies. Her heart thrummed against her ribs. She signed for the flowers, her hand shaky.

Once the door closed, she placed the bouquet on the kitchen counter, the scent immediately filling the small apartment. She circled them slowly, her fingers tracing the velvety petals. Who? The thought ricocheted in her mind.

She searched every pocket of her coat, every inch of the packaging, for a clue. Nothing. A cold knot formed in her stomach.

She considered calling her sister, then dismissed the idea. Best not to involve anyone. She poured herself a glass of water, her hand trembling so much that some splashed onto the counter. She needed to know. The not knowing was a terrible thing.
