Gemotions

The tap at the window, not the door, startled Mark. He was immersed in a book, oblivious to the world. He whipped around, his heart pounding. Mrs. Davis from across the street gestured with a friendly wave and a spade. He sighed.

He opened the window and she began immediately, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. "Mark, dear, your yard gets so much sun! I'm hoping to plant some sunflowers. Just a little corner, near your fence, wouldn't hurt, would it?"

He stared at the perfectly trimmed lawn. He'd spent the weekend on it. His fingers began to itch, and he twisted them together. He wanted to go back to his book, back to his quiet.

He mumbled, "I... I'm not sure. I don't know." He avoided her eyes and closed the window, and sat back at his desk, but was unable to pick up his book. He sat there, staring at the closed window.
