The notice, a stark white rectangle, quivered slightly in Clara’s trembling hands. “Condominium Conversion,” it announced, the words blurring at the edges. She reread the date, the knot in her stomach tightening. Rent control, her lifeline, would soon be a distant memory. She dropped the flyer onto the chipped kitchen table, the sudden noise making her jump. Her fingers automatically reached for a cigarette, though she hadn't smoked in months.

She paced the small apartment, the linoleum floor cold under her bare feet. The old building, with its creaky stairs and faded paint, suddenly felt precarious, like it could crumble around her at any moment. Her breath caught in her throat.

Later that evening, unable to eat, she flicked through the channels on the television, not truly watching anything. Each commercial, each news report, seemed to taunt her with images of luxurious condos and smiling, affluent people. She felt a profound sense of displacement.
