The email notification on the phone buzzed, vibrating through his entire arm. He had to physically restrain himself from throwing the phone against the wall. He stared at the screen, the bold subject line – “Important Announcement Regarding Your Tenancy” – screaming at him.

He slammed the phone down on the counter and immediately regretted it, the sharp noise reverberating. His pulse quickened. He started pacing, back and forth, the confines of the apartment suddenly feeling stifling. The air seemed thick, hard to breathe.

He opened the window, gulping down the cool evening air. The city lights twinkled in the distance, a dazzling spectacle he usually enjoyed. Tonight, they felt like mocking beacons of wealth and opportunity.
