The sound of the power drill was a physical sensation, vibrating through the floorboards and into Amelia's feet. She found herself oddly energized, a restless excitement buzzing beneath her skin. She kept catching glimpses of her neighbor, Steve, through the gaps in the fence, shirtless and focused.

She decided she needed to water the plants. Very slowly. She strolled into the backyard, stretching her neck and shoulders. She took a long, exaggerated breath, smelling the newly turned earth. She found herself lingering near the fence, a small smile playing on her lips. Her legs felt weak.

She bent to examine a wilting rose, carefully cupping the delicate petals with her hand.
