The fence was almost finished. He stood back, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. I saw a certain satisfaction in his posture. Something that I found enthralling. The air was still and warm. I kept thinking about how he'd been so attentive, making sure the posts were perfectly aligned. He caught my eye, and a smile flickered across his face. I felt a sudden dryness in my mouth. "Looks great," I managed, my voice sounding unfamiliar. I felt a quickening, an urgency I couldn't explain.
