The coach pulled her aside during practice. “Sarah, we need your agility in center field. Give it a try.” Sarah’s breath hitched. She’d always been a shortstop, relishing the precision, the quick plays. Now, she’d be covering the vastness of the outfield. A deep, exciting tingle took over her entire body.

The image of the ball soaring through the air, the dive to catch it, lit up her mind. It ignited an urgency, a new craving.

The other players' movements, the crack of the bat, the shout of encouragement – they all felt amplified, as though she were operating at a higher level. She was ready.
