The evidence was undeniable, yet John felt no fear. Only something else. Something electric. He leaned back in his chair, trying to appear composed, but his leg bounced. He felt the blood pounding in his ears.

He focused on the professor's tie, a garish pattern that seemed to pulse before his eyes. The room was spinning. He thought of the consequences – the shame, the failure. Then, he thought of the defiance, the fight. The notion was exciting.

A bead of sweat trickled down his temple. He resisted the urge to wipe it away. His hands felt clammy, yet full of power. He would face this. He would overcome it.
