"So, you're not… a deep-sea submersible engineer?" Sarah asked, her voice barely a whisper. The air in her friend Ben's apartment suddenly felt thick, heavy. She stared at him, at the worn, faded jeans and the comfortable, slightly rumpled t-shirt he was wearing. The image of him in a high-tech diving suit, the life she'd imagined, evaporated like morning mist. A strange tingling sensation spread through her legs.

He stammered, his usual cool composure gone. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that usually annoyed her, but now, it sent a jolt of electricity through her. The truth of the lie, the sheer unexpectedness of it, created an exciting tension.

She bit her lip, unable to control the involuntary movement. The thought of confronting him, of pushing him, of seeing how far he would go, consumed her. Her gaze traced the line of his jaw. She realized she felt a sort of anticipation that she had never felt before, something utterly and totally consuming.
