The sun beat down on the backyard, baking the air into a shimmering heat. Inside the garage, Amelia rummaged through her childhood, a mountain of forgotten memories. She'd always been a rebellious teenager, clashing with her mother at every turn. Yet, here it was, proof of a devotion she hadn't known.

She held up a crumpled drawing, a crude but endearing portrait of a cat, meticulously rendered in crayon. Her lips curved into a surprised smile. She read a short story, her teenage angst spilling from the words. The story transported her back, a tingling sensation spreading through her limbs.
