Gemotions

The silence that followed the coach's words was deafening. Alex, standing amongst the other hopefuls, felt the blood rush to his head, his vision blurring. He hadn't made the debate team. He was stunned. He found himself feeling agitated, unsettled, as if his skin didn't quite fit.

He swallowed hard, trying to regain control. His gaze darted around the room, landing on the smug faces of some of his rivals. He felt a flicker of anger, a sharp, unwelcome sensation in his gut.

He wanted to argue, to challenge the rankings, but he held his tongue. Instead, he forced a smile and offered a brief congratulations to the successful candidates. He turned and walked away, needing the open air. His steps were quick, almost hurried, as he strode away.
