The card was thick, expensive paper, the kind you’d expect from a boutique shop. It depicted a watercolor rendering of peonies, their petals just beginning to unfurl. Sarah’s fingers traced the delicate lines of the flowers, a sudden flush warming her cheeks. A mischievous smile played on her lips as she walked back inside, the door swinging shut behind her.

Her breath hitched as she closed the curtains, plunging the living room into a soft twilight. The silence of the house magnified the thrumming in her chest. Reaching for the remote, she flicked on the TV, the muted images a blur of color and movement. This felt… delicious.

She let the card fall to the floor, the image of the peonies now facing up. Her hand instinctively drifted downwards, finding purchase on her thigh. A low moan escaped her lips as she leaned back onto the sofa. The shadows in the room seemed to deepen.
