"My God," she breathed, her voice a mere whisper. Sarah had always felt a pull toward old houses, a sense of history that thrilled her. This one, with its hidden room behind a panel in the library, was going to be a treasure.

The panel swung open to reveal a narrow staircase leading downwards. The air grew cooler, damper, with a faint aroma of sandalwood and incense. Her heartbeat quickened; she felt the subtle flush rise on her cheeks.

She descended the stairs, her hand gliding along the rough stone wall. The secret space at the bottom was a small, circular room with a single, ornate window. Her breath hitched. The air felt charged, as though something was waiting for her.
