Her hands, usually steady when she cooked, now felt like lead weights. She could feel a flush rising up from her chest.

She imagined the judges, the food critics, savoring it, oblivious to the years of devotion, the late-night trials and errors that had gone into that specific flavor profile. Millie’s heart hammered against her ribs, a wild drumbeat. She wanted to scream, to weep, to destroy everything in her path.
