He was attempting to read, a book he'd been putting off for weeks. Then, from the corner of his eye, he saw it. The dachshund, its sausage-like body a hilarious contrast to its tiny legs. It was digging, oblivious to everything.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable agitation. His hands began to sweat. He closed the book with a snap, the sound echoing in the sudden silence.

He felt a pressure in his chest, a yearning. He had to do something. He pushed himself from the chair, the sudden movement making his head swim. The dog, still digging, had no idea of the internal chaos it had unleashed.
